Beginning Tuesday, July 5, Vail Transit routes servicing West Vail will be modified this summer and fall to accommodate phase-two construction of the I-70 Vail underpass project where the major work will shift to the north and south frontage roads. This work will create one-way traffic through the project site. The route for pedestrians and bicyclists will also be impacted.
Due to the construction, the West Vail Green line will be suspended and the West Vail Red line will increase frequency to every 20 minutes from the Vail Transit Center west on the North Frontage Road to the South Frontage Road. These adjustments will continue to the end of November when the underpass construction will be suspended for the winter season. There are no impacts to other transit providers, including ECO, Bustang and Greyhound.
The Vail Transit adjustments will include the temporary closure of three bus stops on Chamonix Lane on the north side of I-70. Guests at the Holiday Inn bus stop will have the option to use the Fire Station bus stop or the West Vail Mall bus stop. Passengers previously using the Vail Commons stop will be directed to the West Vail Mall stop, while those near the Upper Buffehr Creek bus stop will need to use the Lower Buffehr Creek bus stop for service.
Guests that use the Concert Hall Plaza bus stop should be aware that the last bus west from this bus stop is at 12:52 a.m.; no 2 a.m. service will be provided. Additional options for late-night service include use of the intown bus with a pick up at 1:45 a.m. at the Concert Hall Plaza stop en route to the Vail Transit Center. Another option is to walk across the pedestrian bridge to the Sandstone School bus stop. To provide the safest, most efficient service, the 2 a.m. West Vail buses will be divided into West Vail North and West Vail South.
The remainder of the Vail Transit routes will remain unchanged, as follows:
- East Vail bus departs from the Transportation Center every hour from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. with an additional bus at 2 a.m. if requested.
- Golf Course route departs from the Transportation Center every two hours from 7:40 a.m. to 9:40 p.m. An extra Golf Course route will run at 2 a.m. with the East Vail bus if requested.
- Sandstone loop departs from the Transportation Center every hour from 6:40 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. then every two hours from 10:40 a.m. to 10:40 p.m., with an additional bus at 11:40 p.m. An extra Sandstone loop will run at 2 a.m. with the West Vail Red route if requested.
- In town buses run every 7-to-10 minutes. Extension to Ford Park via Vail Valley Drive runs daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. or longer if an event is taking place.
For a complete bus schedule, call 970-477-3456 or visit the schedule online. Also, express bus service runs between Lionshead and Ford Park via the Frontage Road during peak event days throughout the summer. For details, visit vaileventparking.com.
During phase-two construction of the underpass, the one-way frontage road traffic flow will mirror I-70 - the North Frontage Road will be westbound only through the project site, while the South Frontage Road will be eastbound traffic only through the project site. Apart from the project site, the Frontage Roads will operate as normal two-way traffic. Drivers traveling on the Frontage Roads who reach the one-way stretch in the wrong direction will have the opportunity to turn around and use I-70 or the opposite Frontage Road to reach their destination.
Pedestrians and bicyclists will be restricted from using the Frontage Roads during this phase of work. People traveling on foot or bicycle south of the project area will be directed to use the Gore Valley Trail and those north of the project area will be directed to use a detour built for the North Recreation Path.
