Vail Police: Be Bear Aware
The Vail Police Department is reminding contractors to be mindful about bears and other wildlife. Construction sites are required to use bear-proof containers. Be sure to remove all food items from vehicles and keep them locked. Report all bear activity by calling the police department at 970-479-2201.

Golf Course Neighborhood
Vail Golf & Nordic Clubhouse Renovation, 1775 Sunburst Drive
Wood framing, site, landscaping, utility work, golf course restoration and completion of the parking lot improvements are ongoing. Asphalt paving and striping of the parking lot have been completed. The cart barn is scheduled to be turned over to Vail Recreation District operations on June 1, providing a location for golf cart charging and storage. The project will remain under construction until its completion which is scheduled for September 2016. Please exercise caution in the area and avoid entering the construction site. The overall project includes significant improvements to the clubhouse, new utilities, drainage, parking lot improvements and the use of temporary structures to allow for golf and Nordic operations during construction. As part of the renovation, all existing uses of the building, such as the pro shop, Nordic center, restaurant and cart storage will receive significant improvements. The project also includes a modest expansion to accommodate community uses. The contractor is Evans Chaffee Construction Group. Christy Sports Remodel, 293 Bridge Street
Remodel work consists of interior and exterior improvements. Start date is scheduled for the week of May 31, pending approval of the building permit; completion is scheduled for September 2016. One Vail Place, 244 Wall Street

Golden Peak Pickleball Courts, 461 Vail Valley Drive
Construction documents for the Golden Peak Pickleball Court project are being finalized and construction is anticipated to begin in May and be completed in July. The work includes replacement of the existing tennis courts with six pickleball courts and construction of a unisex public restroom, drinking fountain, parking and landscape improvements. Vail Valley Medical Center Phase 1: West Wing, 181 West Meadow Dr.
West Meadow Drive and the pedestrian sidewalk in front of the hospital will have temporary closures during the spring season to allow concrete pours and material delivery to the south side of the project. Traffic control will be provided. Please exercise caution when in the area. Construction on the project continues with work contained within the construction fence. This project consists of a new fourth floor and expansions on the south and west sides. All construction vehicle access will enter and exit on Vail Road/West Meadow Drive. All hospital services will remain open and fully functional throughout the construction. To access the Emergency Department, use West Meadow Drive. All other patients and visitors should access the hospital via South Frontage Road West. Phase I is scheduled to be completed in 2017. Contractor is G.E. Gorsuch Building, Commissary Restaurant, 263 Gore Creek Dr.
The construction fence is out approximately four feet onto Bridge Street and Gore Creek Drive to allow completion of the project. This will be in place until June 8. Concrete work and exterior improvements are ongoing. All construction deliveries will occur prior to 10:30 a.m. unless approval is granted by the Town of Vail. This project is for a full-service restaurant in the prior Ore House location and includes interior and exterior improvements. The estimated completion date is mid-June 2016. Sebastian Unit 507 reconstruction, 16 Vail Road
All construction work is in the interior of the building. Completion of the landscaping will occur in mid-June. Remodel consists of exterior and interior work to the fifth floor and roof. Vail Spa Exterior remodel, 710 West Lionshead Circle
This project is underway with a completion date of November 2016. Work is contained within the property boundaries. Improvements include new stucco and paint, new windows, exterior and interior pool improvements and new locker rooms. Contractor is R.A. Nelson & Associates, Justin Pronga, 970-949-5152. The Lion Redevelopment (formerly Strata and Lionshead Inn and Lionshead Annex), 705 W. Lionshead Circle
West Lionshead Circle has been narrowed to one lane with traffic flow heading northbound only during daylight working hours to allow for installation of curb, gutter and sidewalk. In addition, a street cut on the South Frontage Road is required to install a new storm drain. Completion is scheduled for June 17. West Lionshead Circle will be open to two-way traffic during non-working hours and weekends. Please exercise caution, traffic control will be provided. Completion of the project is scheduled during the 2016-2017 winter season. Impacts include various periodic single lane closures along the South Frontage Road and West Lionshead Circle throughout the duration of the project. Contractor is PCL Construction, Inc. Arrabelle at Vail Square Waterproofing Repairs, 675 West Lionshead Circle
Work to repair 17 decks with water proofing issues and other miscellaneous maintenance is underway. Impacted areas within the Lionshead Mall are the Montaneros alley, the north end near Sunbird Park, the east end of the Arrabelle as well as the Arrabelle Plaza. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, pedestrian and traffic control personnel will be provided. Completion of project is scheduled for June 17. Contractor is PCL Construction Company. Skatepark at Lionshead parking structure, 350 South Frontage Road West

I-70 Vail Underpass project
I-70 traffic has shifted to the north side of the interstate (into the westbound lanes), so construction can take place on the underpass bridge along eastbound I-70. While I-70 will remain reduced to one lane, drivers should expect minor delays. The eastbound bridge girders are scheduled to be installed the week of June 6. Once the eastbound I-70 bridge is built, scheduled for July 1, I-70 will reopen to two lanes of traffic in each direction. After July 4, the frontage roads will be detoured to function as one-way travel only through the project site to allow for the lowering of both frontage roads; North Frontage Road will be westbound traffic only at the project site and the South Frontage Road will be eastbound traffic only at the project site. This traffic flow will be in place until the end of November at which time the frontage roads will return to two-way traffic for the winter. The project is scheduled for completion by December 2017. Xcel Energy HP utility work
Work to prepare the lowering of the high pressure gas main along the South Frontage Road between Donovan Park and the I-70 Underpass project is scheduled to start June 1. Work requires excavation across both of the travel lanes near Donovan Park and installation of a new above ground valve set. The lowering and relocating of utilities is part of the I-70 Vail Underpass project. Completion of the work is scheduled for late October 2016. Contractor is Snelson Companies Inc./Xcel Energy. Fire Station 1 remodel (East Vail), 4116 Columbine Dr.
MW Golden Constructors has been selected as the contractor. This project will increase the size of the apparatus bay to improve functionality and safety. It will also include space for firefighting equipment storage. The project will add one employee housing unit, while eliminating resident firefighter dormitories which have been moved to the West Vail Fire Station. The finished project will also showcase landscaping which meets scenic screening objectives while providing for sufficient fire defensible space. Start date to be determined pending approvals. Booth Creek Park redevelopment, 2900 Manns Ranch Road
Construction of the Booth Creek Park redevelopment project is anticipated to begin in late May or early June. The work involves a compete redevelopment of the existing park and includes new hard-surface tennis courts, picnic pavilion, restrooms and children’s playground. Vail Cascade Resort and Spa Remodel, 1300 Westhaven Dr.
This $35 million renovation is currently in the early stages of construction awaiting approval of the required permits. Completion of project is scheduled for late December 2016. The project includes upgrades to guest rooms, lounge and bar area, new spa and more. The Aria Athletic Club and Spa and Vail Cascade Condominiums will remain open throughout the construction. Lion’s Ridge Apartment Homes construction (redevelopment of eastern half of Timber Ridge), 1265 N. Frontage Road W.
A temporary certificate of occupancy for buildings 3 and 4 has been issued by the Community Development Department. Landscaping and punch list items will continue until the project is complete. All work is contained within the site. This project involves the demolition of 102 two-bedroom units and the construction of 112 new one- and two-bedroom units. Contractor is RA Nelson. Chamonix Residential Development Site Work, 2310 Chamonix Road
Construction includes installation of storm sewer, water and sewer mains and conduits for electric/phone/TV on the site and storm sewer upgrades at the north side West Vail roundabout. Work in the roundabout is scheduled to occur at night due to traffic volumes and safety. Work adjacent to the roundabout will occur during the day. The town has contracted with Elam Construction for asphalt milling and overlay on Chamonix Lane, Buffehr Creek Road and the western portion of Lionsridge Loop. Work is scheduled to begin June 1 and will take approximately two weeks. Town of Vail Contact is Chad Salli, 970-479-2169.
The town has contracted with A-1 Chipseal to complete this year’s slurry seal surface treatment project. Slurry seal will occur on town streets in the Matterhorn, Glen Lyon and Booth Creek neighborhoods. Work is scheduled to begin May 31 and take approximately one week. Slurry seal creates a new wearing surface and seals the asphalt to prevent the damaging effects of water intrusion into the pavement and oxidation from the sun. Single lane closures will be in place while the slurry seal is placed and traffic will be allowed back on the surface once the product dries, typically three hours. Work is anticipated to take approximately three weeks and completed by end of June 2016. Town of Vail contact is Chad Salli, 970-479-2169.
Colorado Department of Transportation Projects
I-70 Chain Station
CDOT has contracted with SEMA Construction for improvements to the chain station in East Vail. Crews are excavating for installation of the retaining wall between the interstate and frontage road. Beginning Tuesday, there will be a shoulder closure on I-70; crews will also have the frontage road reduced to one lane. Delays of up to 5 minutes may be expected and flaggers will assist travelers. The project will be on a shortened work week, due to the holiday. Construction includes expanding the eastbound chain station 1,500 feet to the west, retaining wall between the interstate and frontage road, upgraded lighting and water quality. The eastbound I-70 outside shoulder will be reduced to two feet from 10 feet on WB I-70 through the chain station expansion. After May, the existing chain up station may be closed until September. There will be a bike route detour in place during construction that routes around the project using the Gore Valley Trail, Vail Valley Drive and Sunburst Drive. I-70 Eagle-Vail Bridges
Traffic is in its normal travel configuration with 11 foot width lanes and 1 foot shoulders. Work will require intermittent closures on US Highway 6 for work on I-70. As always, this work is weather dependent. The project will extend until mid-June. Final project completion will be shortly thereafter once crossovers are removed. I-70 Vail Pass Barrier Project
Construction includes replacement of substandard bridge rail and concrete barrier on I-70 from milepost 180 to 186 on eastbound and westbound. Traffic Impacts during the bridge rail work include narrowing and shifting the through-lanes and single lane closures for the concrete barrier replacement. The maximum length of lane closures will be two miles to further minimize delays in each direction. Two lanes will be open from Friday at 7 a.m. until Monday at 7 a.m. The project will have some night work. Construction is scheduled to begin in May, weather dependent, and be completed in 2017 with no work occurring between approximately October 2016 and end of April 2017.
