West Vail Sewer Main Improvements – West Vail South Frontage Road
Eagle River Water & Sanitation District, in cooperation with the Town of Vail, is installing new sewer main in two areas within the South Frontage Road West. This project is being completed in two phases; Phase 1 began May 16 and completion has pushed to early August. Unforeseen subsurface conditions at extreme depths during Phase 1 led to redesign of the downhill portion of the sewer main, which extended the duration of the Phase 1 work by about one month. Phase 2 started June 25 for five days and will resume in late July or early August. The project is critical to increase sewer main capacity in the West Vail area so ERWSD can accommodate peak sewer flows in the future. The District is partnering with town of Vail to install electrical conduits along South Frontage Road in order to allow for the removal of the existing overhead power lines. The district and town are cooperating to complete both improvements while reducing impacts to the public. Phase 1 of the project is between Stephens Park and Elliot Road in one lane of South Frontage Road West. This lane is closed while deep excavation work occurs. Alternating one-way traffic is open in the remaining lane. Flaggers manage traffic operations during work hours (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and automated traffic lights manage traffic operations at night. Motorists and non-motorists alike must comply with flaggers and traffic lights at all times for their safety due to narrow conditions on the one lane that is open. The eastern end of Phase 1 is complete and the closure length shortened. Barring additional unforeseen issues, all of Phase 1 should be complete by early August, including paving and striping. Phase 2 of the project is located east of the Exit 173 roundabout, on South Frontage Road by Conoco. Underground work in the eastbound lane in front of Conoco is complete for the time being; crews will remobilize to the area in late July or early August. The contractor is Western Pipeway. ERWSD contact is Jeffrey Schneider, 970-445-7941.

A recreation path detour is set up near the south side of the East Vail interchange, directing path users to Bighorn Road. A conflict with an unknown buried gas line delayed the project; active work was suspended while a solution was planned. Gas line relocation began July 16 and was expected to finish July 22, followed by the reopening of the Bridge Road bridge. The bridge will close again in early August to allow for sewer main relocation. During the bridge closure, access to Bridge Road is via Lupine Drive. The project should finish in August.
