In preparation for an upcoming public hearing on Nov. 3, the Vail Town Council will tour the racquet sports facility at Golden Peak Tuesday, Oct. 20, to learn how the courts have been used to accommodate the growing sport of pickleball as well as future improvements recommended by the town staff and Vail Recreation District, plus potential neighborhood impacts.
The site visit will take place during the Town Council work session at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Golden Peak courts, located at 461 Vail Valley Dr., and will include a demonstration of an active pickleball game, weather permitting. Members of the public are invited to join the Town Council, with public comment tentatively scheduled for Nov. 3.
In 2012, the facility was modified to accommodate two pickleball courts and one tennis court. There were additional modifications in 2014, allowing for four permanent pickleball courts and one full tennis court.
The 2016 Town of Vail budget includes a $1 million line-item for facilities improvements at Golden Peak which would include parking, six pickleball courts and ADA improvements. The courts are owned by the town and operated by the Vail Recreation District. The town’s 2016 budget, which is subject to final approval by the Town Council tomorrow evening, also includes $2 million for renovation of Booth Creek Park which includes two new tennis courts. The Town Council had determined earlier to remove pickleball from a list of potential future uses at Booth Creek Park.
Depending on the outcome of Tuesday's site visit and information requested by the Town Council, a discussion and public hearing is tentatively scheduled for the Nov. 3 meeting to determine the future direction for renovation of the Golden Peak courts. An agenda for the upcoming meeting will be available at vailpublic.novusagenda.com on Oct. 30. Following a direction by the Town Council, the facilities improvements will likely require review by the Planning and Environmental Commission and the Design Review Board.
