  • POLICE CHIEF HEADS TO WINTER GAMES

    Vail Police Chief Dwight Henninger will head to the Winter Olympics in Whistler beginning Feb. 10, where he’ll join hundreds of other volunteers who’ll be assisting with the Winter Games. Henninger will be working with the Resort Municipality of Whistler in the Bylaws Services Department, which is similar to Vail’s Code Enforcement Officers (CEOs).

  • ARRESTS MADE IN GRAFFITI SPREE

    Vail Police and Vail Resorts have combined efforts to investigate a vandalism spree that occurred early Wednesday (Feb. 3) morning causing extensive damage to Vail Resorts and Town of Vail property. Three suspects have been arrested and charged with theft, second degree burglary and criminal mischief.

  • MID-SEASON PARKING ADJUSTMENTS APPROVED

    Mid-season adjustments to the town’s parking program will be implemented effective Feb. 8 following a Town Council review this week of recommendations offered by the Vail Parking Task Force.

  • BOARD VACANCIES ANNOUNCED

    The Town of Vail is seeking community members to fill vacancies on three citizen boards. Openings exist on the Planning and Environmental Commission (PEC), the Design Review Board (DRB) and the Art in Public Places Board (AIPP). Applications for all vacancies are due to the town by 5 p.m. March 3. The Vail Town Council will conduct interviews during its work session on March 16, with appointments to follow at its evening meeting. The terms become effective April 1 and expire March 31, 2012 for the DRB and PEC boards and March 31, 2013 for the AIPP board.

  • CENSUS JOBS AVAILABLE

    The U.S. Census Bureau is seeking area citizens to apply as temporary, part-time census takers for the 2010 Census. These short-term jobs offer pay starting at $16/hour, flexible hours, paid training and reimbursement for authorized work-related expenses.

  • 2009 REVENUES MEET FORECASTS

    Town of Vail year-end revenues for 2009 were on pace with budget projections, according to preliminary information compiled by the town’s finance department. The town collected an estimated $42.5 million across all funds during the year.

  • PARKING MODIFICATIONS RECOMMENDED

    The Vail Town Council will review recommendations for mid-season adjustments to the town’s parking program during its evening meeting on Feb. 2. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the Vail Town Council Chambers, 75 S. Frontage Rd. The item is listed second on the agenda and will include opportunities for public comment.

  • VAIL, ASPEN POLICE TRADE PLACES

    Three law enforcement representatives from the Aspen Police Department are in Vail through Jan. 24 to participate in an information-sharing exchange program between the resort communities. Two police officers and a community safety officer are participating in “ride-alongs,” briefings and other regular tasks assigned to Vail’s sworn officers and code enforcement officers. During this same period, Vail code enforcement officer Penny Harpe and police officers Ryan Millbern and Mike Bindle are shadowing officers in Aspen over a four-day period. The exchange is the first of its kind between the two organizations and mimics a similar exchange between Vail and Whistler, British Columbia in 2005.

    The Vail Town Council has approved an emergency ordinance to establish a 180 day moratorium on the processing of permits and licenses related to medical marijuana dispensaries at its Jan. 19 evening meeting.

    (Vail)—The Town of Vail will host a free workshop this month to provide information on newly-enacted building code changes. The session will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 27 at Donovan Pavilion, 1600 S. Frontage Rd. Contractors, builders, architects and property owners are encouraged to attend to learn more about the changes and amendments that became effective Jan. 1. The changes impact the international building code, energy conservation code, fire code, fuel gas code, plumbing code and accessibility standards.

    It may be years before Vail’s banner construction year of 2007 is surpassed – if ever- according to year-end development statistics for 2009 compiled by the Town of Vail Community Development Department. Building valuation totaled nearly $60 million for the year, compared with $157.4 million in building activity in 2008, a decrease of 62 percent and well below Vail’s record of $496 million the previous year.

    The hidden wonders of Vail’s built environment will be revealed during a series of town-sponsored walking tours in Vail Village and LionsHead beginning Dec. 30. Presented by the staff of the Community Development Department, notable details that have shaped Vail’s development for the past 40-plus years will be highlighted on the tour, including the curved shape of Bridge Street, the subtle riddles found on Wall Street, view corridors that preserve the famous postcard images of Vail and the craftsmanship displayed on the exterior of Vail’s finest buildings.

  • STREAM TRACT ENFORCEMENT UNDERWAY

    In the town’s ongoing efforts to protect the riparian qualities of Gore Creek, enforcement actions are underway to remove encroachments into town-owned public stream tracts. The encroachments, ranging from landscaping to permanent structures - including a basketball court - have been identified through a recent survey of the town-owned public stream tracts.

  • VAIL CAMERAS ADDED TO CDOT FEED

    The Town of Vail, in partnership with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Eagle County, has completed installation of cameras on Interstate 70 near each of the three interchanges in Vail. Police Chief Dwight Henninger says the new cameras are positioned near the East Vail, Main Vail and West Vail exits to help police and citizens better assess local road conditions on I-70.

  • CRIME PREVENTION ALERTS AVAILABLE

    Local law enforcement agencies throughout Eagle County are inviting businesses to sign up for a new alert service that provides relevant, real-time crime prevention information to subscribers. The crime prevention service will include information on trends, suspicious persons, counterfeit money and other useful information provided by local law enforcement agencies and distributed through the Eagle County Alert (EC Alert) system.

  • 2009 YEAR IN REVIEW

    Vail’s economic health dominated much of the year as members of the Vail Town Council worked to carefully trim expenses and prioritize services. As a result, the council retained the ongoing funding of special events and other marketing programs as an economic stimulus. The 2010 budget also was adjusted to accommodate construction of a West Vail fire station, concluding a decades-long debate about the station’s life-safety need, which was reinforced when a wildfire threatened the town in August.
