The Mill Creek Circle utility and street reconstruction project in Vail will require the closure of Mill Creek Circle at Vail Valley Drive for installation of the new sanitary sewer main. The closure will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 2 -6. The detour will be Vail Road through the Mill Creek Road forest service tunnel located at Vail Front Door to the Vail Resorts parking lot located off Mill Creek Circle.

The Town of Vail is seeking applications from community members to fill a mid-term vacancy on the Planning and Environmental Commission (PEC). Applications are due to the town by 5 p.m. Aug. 24. Applicants must be residents and registered voters in the Town of Vail.

The discussion will include a public hearing to allow for citizen questions and comments.

For the third year, the New York Philharmonic will exchange instruments for gloves when it challenges the Vail Police Department in the 2010 Jerome Ashby Memorial Softball Game at 5 p.m. July 27 on the west ball field at Ford Park. The community is invited to attend the game and encouraged to bring donations of nonperishable food items to kick-off the 10th annual “Make a Difference Day” food drive coordinated by the Vail Police Department.

The Mill Creek Circle utility and street reconstruction project in Vail will require the diversion of West Mill Creek to East Mill Creek to facilitate the replacement of culverts at Mill Creek Circle. The diversion will take place on July 22 and will include diverting all of Mill Creek to the east branch of Mill Creek at the headwall located near Golden Peak. Any affected fish found in West Mill Creek after the diversion is implemented will be captured and relocated to Gore Creek.

The Vail Town Council will consider a resolution Tuesday approving the purchase of a privately-held parcel that has been used historically for public parking at Red Sandstone Park, located at 635 N. Frontage Rd. The resolution authorizes a maximum purchase price of $350,000 for the property, which is owned by the Lazier family.

Repairs to temporarily shore up the boulder retaining wall and a section of the Dowd Junction recreation path will begin Tuesday (July 13) and will take approximately five days. The work will be occurring at the east end of the path approximately 100 yards from the Intermountain gate.

The Town Council has unanimously approved a resolution in opposition of three Colorado ballot issues it says will be devastating for the town if approved in November. According the evidence and testimony presented at the public hearing on July 6, Proposition 101 and Amendments 60 and 61 have the potential to create an annual revenue shortfall to the town of over $5 million by 2013 if passed.

The Town of Vail enjoyed a peaceful July 4th celebration this year despite large crowds. The annual parade drew an estimated 20,000 people, yet police action was limited to a few parking tickets. The Vail Police Department had a total of 3 arrests and issued 4 summonses into municipal court during the night time activities. Charges ranged from minor in possession of alcohol and false identification to driving under the influence of alcohol and an outstanding warrant. In addition to the enforcement actions, the department also placed 2 people into protective custody for excessive alcohol consumption.

The Town of Vail is seeking bids for construction of the first phase of the Lionshead Transit Center. The project includes a pull-off on the South Frontage Road for ECO regional buses, along with construction of a 1,200 sq. ft. building containing restrooms and waiting area, and a new short term skier drop-off. Construction is scheduled to begin in August pending approvals and financial authorization by the Town Council.

With Fourth of July celebrations nearing, public safety agencies in Eagle County would like to remind everyone that the personal use of most fireworks is prohibited. Illegal fireworks include those that fly into the air and those with a loud bang such as bottle rockets, firecrackers, cherry bombs, Roman candles and M-80 salutes. Damage to public property from localized flooding during the spring runoff in Vail currently ranges from $500,000 to $1.2 million, according to Town Engineer Tom Kassmel, who presented an update to the Town Council today. The assessment is preliminary and based on damage reports received during emergency response calls. He says a full assessment of the damage will occur once it becomes safe to canvass Gore Creek and its tributaries and when flows are low enough to visually inspect culverts, bridges and erosion. The assessment will compile all damaged areas and identify areas in need of preventive repairs in anticipation of a similar event in the future.

The Singing Trees, a spectacular environmental art installation utilizing beetle-killed lodgepole pine by artists Ben Roth and Brad Watsabaugh, is now on view in Vail’s Ford Park. The wildland firefighting division of the Vail Fire Department and A Cut Above Forestry of Breckenridge cut standing dead lodgepole pines selected for the project from private property in East Vail. The trees were then transported to the lower bench of Ford Park by crews from the Town of Vail Public Works Department where the installation was created. A celebratory opening for this major environmental artistic feat will take place on July 10 at the installation site in Ford Park.

Artists Ben Roth and Brad Watsabaugh will complete their environmental art installation utilizing beetle-killed lodgepole pine in Ford Park today (June 11). The wildfire crew from the Vail Fire Department and representatives from A Cut Above Forestry of Breckenridge worked earlier this week to cut standing dead lodgepole pines selected for the project from private property in East Vail. The trees were then transported to the lower bench of Ford Park by the staff from the town’s Public Works Department.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is resuming work on an Interstate 70 improvement project between Vail and Frisco. Remaining work consists of concrete sealing, in-lay striping and minor bridge improvements, all of which are temperature-sensitive and could not be completed before the project was suspended due to adverse weather in November 2009.

A six-person wildfire crew hired by the Town of Vail will be working in nine project areas this season as part of its continuing effort to create a defensible space between the White River National Forest and Vail’s boundaries. The work includes cutting, piling, chipping and burning of dead and diseased lodgepole pines in the targeted areas as well as cutting of affected aspen stands to bring new growth to the forest. In addition, crews will continue inspections of private properties to facilitate the removal of dead trees as required by the town.

The Teva Mountain Games, a project of the Vail Valley Foundation, is being honored by the Town of Vail with the first-ever Sustainable Special Event Award for outstanding efforts to host an environmentally conscious event. The award was earned during the 2009 Teva Games and will be presented to event organizers during opening ceremonies for the 2010 games at 6:30 p.m. Thursday (June 3) at Checkpoint Charlie. Presenting the award on behalf of the town will be Andy Daly, a member of the Vail Town Council.

The Town of Vail is offering its residents free mulch for placement around trees and shrubs or other garden locations. Mulch helps conserve water by decreasing soil temperatures and the amount of soil exposed to wind and sun. The mulch is available at the town’s Public Works facility, 1309 Elkhorn Drive, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents must load their own trucks and provide their own buckets and shovels. The mulch will be available while supplies last until Oct. 29.
