  • LATE SEASON BUS SERVICE APRIL 5-18

    Town of Vail buses will transition from the full winter schedule to an end of season schedule April 5-18. The end of season schedule will provide 40-minute to one-hour service on most outlying routes during peak times and one-to-two hour service on most outlying routes during non-peak times. Additional service will be provided on weekends and during special events to accommodate ridership demand.

    The hidden wonders of Vail’s built environment will be revealed during a town-sponsored walking tour beginning at 2 p.m. Friday (March 5) in Vail Village and LionsHead. Presented by the staff of the Community Development Department, notable details that have shaped Vail’s development for the past 40-plus years will be highlighted on the free tour, including the curved shape of Bridge Street, the subtle riddles found on Wall Street, view corridors that preserve the famous postcard images of Vail and the craftsmanship displayed on the exterior of Vail’s finest buildings.

  • FAVORABLE 2009 BUDGET PERFORMANCE

    A preliminary year-end financial report for 2009 shows a better than anticipated budget performance for the Town of Vail. According to Finance Director Judy Camp, the town ended the year with a surplus in the general fund and no use of reserves.

    Vail’s state of the economy will be the focus of the town’s Annual Community Meeting and Open House which takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. March 9 at the Donovan Pavilion. The event is sponsored by the Vail Town Council and will include opportunities to learn more about the community’s economic health as well as priority actions identified by the town and its partner agencies, including Vail Resorts, Vail Recreation District, Eagle River Water & Sanitation District, Eagle County Wildfire Mitigation and the U.S. Forest Service.

  • VAIL HIRING SEASONAL WILDFIRE CREW

    The Town of Vail has begun taking applications for six seasonal wildland firefighter openings that will be used to staff the town’s wildfire mitigation crew for the fourth consecutive season. The crew members will work from May 10 to Oct. 31 and will assist with tree cutting, pile burns, property inspections and other assignments to support the town’s forest health projects, which will continue for the next several years.

    Mayor Dick Cleveland and other local dignitaries will be reading their favorite childhood stories from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. March 3 during the Read Across America event at the Vail Public Library. The activity is in honor of the 106th birthday of Theodore Geisel, otherwise known as Dr. Seuss.

  • POLICE SEEK THEFT SUSPECTS

    Vail Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying two men who committed a theft of several pieces of jewelry from a residence in the Vail Village area. The theft occurred during the evening of Feb. 7 when the men were visiting the residence.

  • FIRE ISO RATING IMPROVES

    An evaluation of fire suppression capabilities within the Town of Vail has shown improvement according to a report released by the Insurance Services Office (ISO) following an inspection in June. The ISO’s public protection classification report is used nationally to help establish fair premiums for homeowners and commercial fire insurance.

    Vail Police responded to a death investigation at a Vail Village hotel at 8:20 a.m. today (2/12), where Steve Kaufman, 49, of Sherman Oaks, Calif., was found dead in his hotel room.

    After being honored as the Green Business of the Year by the Vail Valley Partnership, the environmental team at the Town of Vail is already gearing up for an expansion of its initiatives to be presented to the Town Council on Feb. 22.

  • SNOW POLAR BEAR DEBUTS

    Karl Krueger, a well-known architect and native of Vail, is lending his latest creation to the Town of Vail’s Art in Public Places program. His snow polar bear sculpture was installed this week in Vail Village and is already a crowd pleaser. The polar bear is located at the intersection of Gore Creek Drive and Wall Street across from the Children's Fountain.

  • CRANE REMOVAL BITTERSWEET

    It’s a bittersweet moment for Vail with this week’s dismantling of a tower crane at the Solaris construction site. It’s the last of a string of cranes that have been in use since 2004, a symbol of Vail’s robust redevelopment. During the height of the construction activity in 2008, as many as eight permanent cranes filled the sky. The result includes new lodging units, additional amenities and increased revenues to the town following major investments by the Tivoli Lodge, Arrabelle at Vail Square, One Willow Bridge Road, Vail Plaza Hotel, Manor Vail, Mountain Plaza, The Willows, Lion Square North, Landmark and many other developments throughout the town.

  • POLICE CHIEF HEADS TO WINTER GAMES

    Vail Police Chief Dwight Henninger will head to the Winter Olympics in Whistler beginning Feb. 10, where he’ll join hundreds of other volunteers who’ll be assisting with the Winter Games. Henninger will be working with the Resort Municipality of Whistler in the Bylaws Services Department, which is similar to Vail’s Code Enforcement Officers (CEOs).

  • MID-SEASON PARKING ADJUSTMENTS APPROVED

    Mid-season adjustments to the town’s parking program will be implemented effective Feb. 8 following a Town Council review this week of recommendations offered by the Vail Parking Task Force.

  • BOARD VACANCIES ANNOUNCED

    The Town of Vail is seeking community members to fill vacancies on three citizen boards. Openings exist on the Planning and Environmental Commission (PEC), the Design Review Board (DRB) and the Art in Public Places Board (AIPP). Applications for all vacancies are due to the town by 5 p.m. March 3. The Vail Town Council will conduct interviews during its work session on March 16, with appointments to follow at its evening meeting. The terms become effective April 1 and expire March 31, 2012 for the DRB and PEC boards and March 31, 2013 for the AIPP board.

    The U.S. Census Bureau is seeking area citizens to apply as temporary, part-time census takers for the 2010 Census. These short-term jobs offer pay starting at $16/hour, flexible hours, paid training and reimbursement for authorized work-related expenses.

    Town of Vail year-end revenues for 2009 were on pace with budget projections, according to preliminary information compiled by the town’s finance department. The town collected an estimated $42.5 million across all funds during the year.
