Effective Jan. 1, the Town of Vail sales tax has decreased by a half-cent and the townís lodging tax has decreased by 1.5 percent. The two tax decreases are the result of the defeat of a November 2005 ballot question, which terminated the Town of Vailís authority to collect the .5 percent sales tax and 1.5 percent lodging tax approved by voters in 2002 to build and operate a conference center.
Vailís sales tax has decreased from 8.9 percent to 8.4 percent, as follows:
Town of Vail 4.0%
State of Colorado 2.9%
Eagle County 1.5%
The repeal of the short-term accommodation tax decreases Vailís lodging tax from 11.8 percent to 9.8 percent, as follows:
Sales Tax 8.4%
Vail Local Marketing District Tax 1.4%
Conference center taxes collected between Jan. 1, 2003 and Dec. 31, 2005 total approximately $7.7 million after expenses. A Vail Town Council decision on the disposition of the funds is pending. For more information, call the townís sales tax division at 479-2125.
